1) Fiesta Pilar
Fiesta Pilar is one of the most awaited fiestas in Zamboanga City and even to the whole world. Fiesta Pilar is in honor of the patron saint Nuestra Senora la Virgen del Pilar. A holy figure believed in Roman Catholicism the lady of help who have lifted a hand to rescue the brave soldiers from the attacks of the moro warrior in the 1500s.
Its replica is installed in adobe walls (a wall that shields the barracks of the soldiers, built by Spaniards during their colonization) at the Fort Pilar Shrine in Zamboanga City.
Fiesta Pilar is celebrated every month of October, yearly, where thousands of devotees light their candles at the shrine.
2) Regatta de Zamboanga
Regatta is a Latin word which means “to compete, to race using boats.” Regatta de Zamboanga, in the same manner, means “racing of boats in Zamboanga.”
It is an annual celebration in line with the Hermosa Festival (one of the fiestas in the city) where hundreds of participants with colourful vintas (boats) meet to grace this big event. It’s a very unique competition.
All participants have their own gimmicks to make their vinta the most attractive one in the race. Vintas in the race are usually has its sail adorned with colourful cloth made with indigenous materials in vibrant colors.
3) Zamboanga Hermosa Festival
Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is a continuation of the long month celebration of Fiesta Pilar. In this celebration, people in Zamboanga City gathered downtown to witness different fiesta extravaganza.
This is to celebrate the city as known for its title “the city of flowers” where Hermosa means flower or beautiful. People can witness different displays of colourful vibrant flowers in parade in floating and street dance competition.
4) Dia de Zamboanga
This celebration, Dia de Zamboanga, is in honor of the birth of the city. In other words, it’s a celebration of its foundation day.
Zamboanga was founded on February 26, 1937, which is commemorated every year. During the commemoration different events are held highlighting city’s history and the preservation of its rich culture.
